Super food is the new buzz word, and they are popping up all over the place, but what makes a food super and what can it do for you? Before I get to that let's talk about food vs. nutrition. Food is the edible stuff you put in your mouth. Nutrition, or nutrients are what your body hopefully gets from that food. Macronutrients are proteins, carbohydrates and fats. They are the calories you use and burn as fuel. Micronutrients are the vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants your body uses for growth development and other physiological functions including repair. Vitamin B could be considered the spark plug to your combustion engine, and antioxidants are like your vandal fighting security team. Some foods are high in macronutrients (calories) like brownies, and some foods are high in micronutrients, like an apple, and some foods are high in both, nuts for instance. A super food is LOADED with micronutrients, especially antioxidants usually and very low in calories. These food are desirable because they contain the nutrient value of a lot of food in a very small package. In a culture where famine is not a valid threat, micronutrients are more beneficial to your well being than calories. Some of my favorites are spirulina, a blue green algae and bee pollen. They contain high amounts of everything you need to thrive. A diet high in super foods and low in calories is a recipe for longevity and wellness!
